Ancient Nicopolis
Ancient Nicopolis was a city of Epirus founded by the Romans in southwestern Epirus near today’s Preveza. Its archaeological site is today the largest ancient city in Greece (H. Gouvas, 2009). Ancient Nikopolis is located right next to the homonymous community of Nikopolis, at the narrowest point of the isthmus of the Preveza peninsula, adequately protected by law from building, with an archaeological law, and can be visited.
Pantokrator's Castle
At 3.5 km by car from Evangeline Maisons you will find the castle of Pantokrator, one of the many fortifications of Preveza, at the mouth of the strait that leads from the Ionian Sea to the Ambraki Gulf, dominating.
The castle which nowadays is known as Pantokrator’s, because of the church of the same name that existed in almost the same place before the castle was built, was originally called Geni Kale (new castle) by the Ottomans.
The French, translating the Turkish name of the castle, mark it on their maps, as early as 1820, as Fog Nef.
However, the name Geni Kale had been given, as early as 1807, to the castle that is today known as Saint George’s, about a kilometer east of Pantokrator. It seems that this name could not be removed from the castle of Saint George and so the new castle prevailed to be called Pantokrator’s Castle, as early as 1830, as evidenced by naval charts of the British Admiralty.
Agios Charalambos Prevezis
The Metropolitan Church of Agios Charalambos is located just 300 meters from Evangeline Maisons and was built at the beginning of the 18th century.
According to the testimony of Seraphim Xenopoulos, it was built on the ruins of an older church that had been there since 1715.
The church is a single-aisled Basilica, and is famous for its wood-carved and gilded iconostasis, which is a work of art, of inestimable value, and is estimated to have been created in 1827-1828. This iconostasis is the creation of Epirotian carvers-artisans, who worked with faith and patience for many years until they perfected it. Thanks to this excellent construction, which symbolizes the vine and includes many representations from the Holy Bible, as well as from all phases of the construction of the temple, especially the interior decoration, the temple has been designated a neoclassical listed monument.
Agios Charalambos is celebrated on February 10.
